The couch in the child psychotherapists mind Thinking about play, thinking during play and playing with thoughts
A child playing on the floor and an adult talking on the couch would at first seem to be quite different activities. But are there similarities and connections between them? In this paper some ideas are offered as to how and where the author experienced personal analysis as meaningful for working with children, focusing upon common points between each. Three crucial elements are described: the therapists capacity to play, the therapists capacity to be surprised, and the therapists capacity to bear and to handle regression. The therapists experience in living with his inner child underneath his skin is also described. Finally, some comments are made concerning the interplay between the therapists experience on the couch, behind the couch, and on the floor next to the couch.
