Couch analysis: an empirical approach
The author presents some ideas about the use of the couch in classical psychoanalysis. American and European efficacy and effectiveness studies of classical psychoanalyses and psychoanalytical psychotherapy are reviewed. A first-hand process-outcome study of hospitalization-based psychoanalytical psychotherapy is presented. The authors conclusion is that classical psychoanalysis and psychoanalytical psychotherapy are different techniques, with many different mediating factors present in each of them. Pre-treatment patient characteristics would seem important in the choice of type of treatment.
