The growing pain of the depressive position
Psychic growth is not possible without growing pains, which differ from traumatic pain. This is the nucleus of Bion’s thinking. As psychic growth and development are synonymous with the movement from the paranoid-schizoid position to the depressive position, attainment of the latter is dependent on someone’s ‹ decision › to endure the growing pains involved in this process. The inner freedom toward this decision can be obstructed by traumatic experiences that have resulted in certain forms of splitting and projective identification. In this article theoretical and technical aspects of a form of splitting between an ‹ adapted-I › and a ‹ fantasy-I › are elaborated.
