De intieme afstandelijkheid van het subject
Summary
By the concept of ‘intimate distance of the subject’ from the self the author means that subjectivity is characterized by the combination of distance and proximity from the self, by intrasubjective reciprocation between distance and proximity. Psychopathology – up to and including psychotic self-loss – can be described in terms of impairment of this reciprocal movement. By means of the metaphor of the boomerang and inspired by Freud, Bion and Lacan, the author describes the problems that arise from too great or too small a distance from the self and puts the clinical question of how the ‘right’ distance can be found. The problem arises that to some extent psychoanalysis itself – by its investigation of the conditions and the boundaries of subjectivity – both attracts and repels the intimate distance.
