Summary
Psychopathological assessment plays an important role in the initial phase of inpatient treatment of adolescents. A developmental model of adolescence is used for the purpose of understanding the nature of any given adolescent disorder. The symptoms are seen as a defence against anxieties caused by the developmental tasks of adolescence, a process that is influenced by early development in childhood. The transference to the examining analyst is an important tool in establishing whether a developmental breakdown has occurred and in examining how the adolescent can be brought into contact with his anxieties, so that development can proceed.
