De innerlijke band van de psychoanalyse met de filosofie
Summary
Psychoanalysis is closely related to philosophy. In psychoanalytic treatment a person’s basic assumptions about the world, others and him- or herself are explored. One of the tasks of philosophy is to examine basic assumptions or ways of thinking about the possible relations between man and the world. In philosophy a distinction is made between a classic, a modern and a postmodern way of thinking. This distinction can also be made in the field of psychoanalysis, with regard to both patient and analyst. The patient may be found to base his life on a certain way of thinking, but also the analyst may prove to be favouring one frame of reference or another (conception of mankind, ethics).
The importance of recognizing the intimate relation between philosophy and psychoanalysis is twofold. Theoretically, it may lead to clarification and broadening of psychoanalysis, since psychoanalysis can draw on the rich source of philosophy. Practically, the analyst is made aware of his own contribution to this clarification, both conceptually and ethically.
