Sublimation: an impossible concept?
Sublimation has been called an ‘impossible concept’: there is no single theory of sublimation in Freud but, in the words of Parveen Adams, ‘rather a number of loosely woven strands developed to varying degrees’. This article is written as a review of three recently published works on sublimation. First, there is the position taken by Belgian scholars like Antoine Vergote and Paul Moyaert, who choose to represent sublimation in a desexualized form and try to rethink the concept, using examples from mystical philosophy (Vergote) and courtly love (Moyaert). Vergote’s book is mostly a critical reading of Freud’s work on sublimation, while Moyaert engages in a dialogue with Vergote and Lacan.
In a volume edited by Parveen Adams the idea of satisfaction of the drive is successfully sustained. The quality of Freud’s and Lacan’s views on sublimation is tested through their productiveness in the analysis of cultural objects. The authors in this book present unorthodox and inspiring views on sublimation, and they emphasize the link between sublimation and ethics made by Lacan in his seminars.
