The consoling smile of the Superego. Re-reading Freud’s ‘On Humour’
The author of this article shows that according to Freud the psychological capacity for humour is based on the repetition of an infantile situation in which the identification with the mother’s smile makes the child insensitive to feelings of pain and anxiety. The author then suggests that this may open a new perspective on the psychoanalysis of masochism. In this perspective masochism would be the ‘re-sexualization’ of the infantile situation which in humour is repeated intra-psychically.
