Frances Tustin: autism and psychological birth
Frances Tustin has contributed extensively to the psychoanalytic study of psychogenic autism. She proposes that autism is a system of protective but alienating auto-sensual aberrations which have developed to deal with the experience of body-separateness. Her concepts relating to autistic object-relatedness have clinical value. By way of theory of psychological birth, Tustin proposes innate mechanisms that are activated by environmental cues and organize sensationbased experiences leading to the formation of primitive spatial and conceptual representation, seen by Tustin as a foundation on which later, more complex representations can be built. Similar models are being used in cognitive psychology and neuroscience.
