If effective contact with the Self has been made, analysis cures the fragmented Self of patients with constitutional eczema. Esther Bick's work has been the basis for belief that the lack of a primary skin as a boundary between mother and child results in a lack of vocabulary to formulate a child’s inner world. Transference and countertransference have been found to be the only instruments to enable the patient to come to terms with himself. The insight of lacking a true skin delivered the possibility of throwing off a former false skin. The skin as such appeared a metaphor for the psychoanalytic process itself, whereby the patient is provided with an artificial skin, out of which a new true skin can gradually be formed, permeable as well as impermeable.
