Oedipus on the Trobriand Islands
The relationship between psychoanalysis and anthropology is investigated by focusing on Bronislaw Malinowskis interpretation of Freuds idea of the Oedipus complex, which he used to interpret the society of the Trobriand Islands. It is argued that Malinowskis interpretation of the Oedipus complex on the Trobriand Islands has been misconstrued on several counts; that he neither falsified the Oedipus complex nor denied its universality; and that he never broke up with Freud completely and was not prompted towards a total rejection of Freuds anthropological ideas. It is concluded that anthropology can therefore still benefit from psychoanalysis, despite or even because of the differences between them.
