The erotic beginning of a new world
The author presents the three fundamentals of Géza Róheims psychoanalytic anthropology: (1) His critique of functionalism in cultural anthropology, (2) the ontogenetic theory of culture, and (3) the theory of the basic dream . While today Róheims ideas are considered theoretically outdated and methodologically unsound, they may still be held relevant in the questioning of current psychoanalytic conceptions because they focus on the principal object of psychoanalysis: the erotic body in its interaction with cultural practices. Róheims theory, with its emphasis on dreams, sex and happiness, offers a radical alternative to a way of life that is obsessed with self-preservation, power and health, and thus with death.
