Talkimages and featherthoughts — On the art of Louise Bourgeois
The art of Louise Bourgeois has repeated references to her childhood traumas, yet she states that her work is not autobiographical. In her sculptures, paintings, etchings and drawings as in her writings and interviews Louise Bourgeois posits herself in contradiction, ambiguity, and paradox. The themes of her work are male versus female, monumentality versus intimacy, cold steel versus warm wool, delicate versus brutal, sinister versus sensual. In her ‘erotic’ work she playfully confuses genders. At the same time she ironically takes up a position against the phallocratic fathers of surrealism and psychoanalysis. In seeking to describe her work the author uses the oxymoron trope that resembles the ambivalent work of mourning in psychoanalytic practice.
