De Oedipusmythe en het Oedipuscomplex
Summary
This treatment of the Oedipus myth and the history of a Theban dynasty is divided into three approaches to the interpretations of the myth.
1. By using the myth as a metaphor Freud gave a name to a conflict that he had observed in his patients.
2. A number of psychoanalysts after Freud have not restricted themselves to a symbolic interpretation of the myth, but have described the Oedipus figure as a real patient.
3. Cultural historians have interpreted the myth against the background of the culture in which the myth originated.
The Oedipus myth has, scientifically, a heuristic meaning. It has been used to clarify scientific (analytic and cultural historic) insights. These meanings seem to get lost as analysts clarify the insight into the ‘patient Oedipus’ by interpreting him within the framework of a theoretical approach; in this case the interpretation gives a better illustration of the history of the psychoanalytical movement than of a theoretical concept.
