Apoptose, een biologische basis van de doodsdrift?
Summary
For the last twentyfive years biologists have studied the process of apoptosis, the cell’s death programme. Every cell contains genetic information as to how to die, but most of the time this is blocked. When the block is removed, the cell starts its death programme, the apoptose. The similarity of this process to the concept of the death instinct is stirring and some reflections on it follow a short review of the literature. Freud suggested the possibility of a biological basis to the death instinct in 1923.
