Ik-ideaal en ideaal-Ik
Summary
Lacan distinguishes two separate instances concerning the function of the ideal in the psyche: the Ego-Ideal and the ideal-Ego. The former primarily acts as the signifier of the symbolic lack, the fundamentally unbridgeable distance between the subject and any ideal-representation. The latter essentially denies the symbolic lack and therefore embodies the beloved image of the Ego. However, since the subject can never simply bridge the gap between itself and the narcissistic image, owing to the dominance of the symbolic, the imaginary denial of the symbolic lack inevitably evokes a direct and painful confrontation with the unreachable ideal image in the other. The aggression that results from this frustration typically belongs to the category of the imaginary and will be directed towards the other. Some clinical and research implications of Lacan’s theory concerning the Ego-Ideal and the ideal-Ego are discussed.
