Culturele instincten
Summary
In psychoanalytic theory, cultural phenomena are usually explained as the result of sublimation, which means that the sexual drives of the individual are transformed into cultural tendencies. Recent psychological findings show, however, that cultural instincts belong to human nature, and consequently do not need to develop during childhood or the latency period. On the one hand, we may conclude from this that the use of traditional Freudian psychodynamics in the ‘cultural sciences’ is highly redundant, if not plainly misleading. On the other hand, Mithen’s interpretation of archaeological data in his Prehistory of the Mind can open new perspectives for an amended psychodynamics of psychopathology and culture. Careful analysis of Freud’s study of Leonardo da Vinci even shows that such a theory does not have to be anti-Freudian.
