Socrates as predecessor of the psychotherapist: a Lacanian and cognitive perspective
Psychotherapists of a number of different schools, among them Lacan, consider Socrates a predecessor of the psychotherapist. In Seminar VIII Lacan interpreted a dialogue between Socrates and Alcibiades as if it were a psychoanalytic session. Lacan considers Socrates refusal to respond to Alcibiades provocations an example of the psychoanalysts abstinence. Comparison between Socrates and the analyst is confined to this point. Through transference the analyst becomes part of the analysands inner world with its unconscious fantasies, and from this position he interprets the latter. Socrates, on the contrary, attacked, from the outside, the contradictions in the thinking of his partners in discussion, in order in order to lead them away from the illusory world of objects towards ideal beauty. The objective of psychoanalysis is to emphasize the unique characteristics of each individual human being.
