Summary
Less sadism, more love: attachment in the work of Klein and Balint
According to Fonagy, an attempt should be made to replace the categorical approach which is prevailing in present-day debate on attachment by a ‘dimensional’ approach. Balint’s reading of the work of Melanie Klein can be considered a first attempt to formulate a theoretical foundation for Fonagy’s suggestion. This article shows how such a dimensional approach can help towards the integration of the dimension of attachment into a psychoanalytic and pathoanalytic framework.
