A case-report of the analysis of an adolescent with encopresis and anal masturbation
This article presents a case-study or the psychoanalytic treatment of a fifteen-year-old old boy who has been suffering from obstipation and encopresis since his early childhood. In later years persistent anal masturbation has come to the fore. The regulating and dysregulating aspects of the affective dialogue between this boy and his analyst are fully considered, as well as the technical and limit-setting aspects of the psychoanalytic treatment.
Since anality provides one of the main cornerstones of psychoanalytic theory, it is remarkable how little child psychoanalysts have published on encopresis. Data on the subjective, intimate experiences of encopretic children are relatively rare. The author emphasises the close interrelationship of physiological and psychological aspects of (affect-) regulation.
