The Piano Teacher: Elfriede Jelinek and the description of a female perverse scenario
Nobel Prize-winner Elfriede Jelineks famous novel The Piano Teacher (Die Klavierspielerin, 1983) is analysed as a sensitive description of a female perverse scenario. Female perverse scenarios tend to be overlooked in psychoanalytical theory owing to gender-stereotyped images. The article focuses on the daughters relationship with the intrusive and controlling mother, the archaic images of the mother and the relationship with the body as container of unmentalized affects. The perverse scenario is considered as a need for escape, which leads however to loss of hope as a result of violent rape by the male protagonist.
