Narcisme in de Nederlandse psychoanalyse
Samenvatting
Narcism in Dutch psychoanalysis
To mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of psychoanalysis in the Netherlands, a review is given of the outstanding place allotted to the subject of narcissism by several generations of Dutch psychoanalysts in the middle and later years of the 20th century. It is argued that the most distinctive feature that appears and reappears in their approach to narcissism consists in the specific way in which narcissistic grandiosity is understood in the context of Freud's Splitting of the Ego in the Process of Defence [1940e, 1938]. R. le Coultre was the first to see how traumatic experience can give rise to a split-off, secretly hidden shadow existence of a grandiose Ego, which is nevertheless experienced as the basically real and true self. Attention is given to the work — especially in its technical aspects — of several analysts who have elaborated this approach up to the present day.
