The nature of a literary work and the subjective position of the reader
This article examines the possibility of psychoanalytic interpretation of a work of art, especially a literary work, without reference to the psyche of the author. A literary work is characterized, in a phenomenological way, as a specific way of disclosing the world, a way of world- making. The frame of a disclosed world can be compared with what is called, in Lacanian psychoanalysis, a phantasma which expresses a subjective position. A psychoanalytic interpretation of a literary work implies consequently the analysis of the basic phantasma and subjective position, which underlie the framing of the disclosed world of the work. The way the reader is touched depends on whether he has access to the specific way of world-making of the work. The neurotic, borderline and psychotic positions are being discussed. The psychotic position deserves special attention because the possibility of a psychotic way of world-making is problematic.
